Pagerwesi artinya pagar dari besi. Yang melambangkan suatu perlindungan yang kuat. Hari raya Pagerwesi sering diartikan oleh umat Hindu sebagai hari untuk memagari diri yang dalam bahasa Bali disebut magehang awak.

Hari Raya Pagerwesi  jatuh pada Buda (Rabu), Kliwon, Sinta. Jika diperhatikan dengan seksama, ada kaitan langsung dengan Hari Raya Saraswati yang jatuh pada Saniscara (Sabtu), Umanis, Watugunung. Dalam sistim kalender wuku yang berlaku di Bali, wuku Watugunung adalah urutan wuku yang terakhir dari 30 wuku yang ada, sedangkan wuku Sinta adalah wuku dalam urutan pertama atau awal dari suatu siklus wuku.

Makna Pagerwesi

Sebagaimana telah disebutkan dalam lontar Sundarigama, Pagerwesi yang jatuh pada Budha Kliwon Shinta merupakan hari Payogan Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru diiringi oleh Dewata Nawa Sangga. Hal ini mengundang makna bahwa Hyang Premesti Guru adalah Tuhan dalam manifestasinya sebagai guru sejati. Makna yang lebih dalam terkandung pada kemahakuasaan Sanghyang Widhi sebagai pencipta, pemelihara, dan pemusnah, atau dikenal dengan Uttpti, Stiti, dan Pralina atau dalam aksara suci disebut: Ang, Ung, Mang.

Saraswati yang jatuh pada hari terakhir dari wuku terakhir diperingati dan dirayakan sebagai anugerah Sanghyang Widhi kepada umat manusia dalam bentuk ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi, diartikan sebagai pembekalan yang tak ternilai harganya bagi umat manusia untuk kehidupan baru pada era berikutnya yang dimulai pada wuku Sinta.

Oleh karena itu rangkaian hari-hari dari Saraswati ke Pagerwesi, mengandung makna sebagai berikut:

  1. Setelah Saraswati, esoknya hari Minggu, adalah hari Banyupinaruh, di mana pada hari itu umat Hindu di Bali melakukan pensucian diri dengan mandi di laut atau di kolam mata air. Pada saat ini dipanjatkan permohonan semoga ilmu pengetahuan yang sudah dianugerahkan oleh Sanghyang Widhi dapat digunakan untuk tujuan-tujuan mulia bagi kesejahteraan umat manusia di dunia dan terjalinnya keharmonisan Trihita Karana, yaitu hubungan yang harmonis antara manusia dengan Tuhan, manusia dengan sesama manusia, dan manusia dengan alam semesta.
  2. Kemudian esoknya, hari Senin disebut hari Somaribek, yang dimaknai sebagai hari di mana Sanghyang Widhi melimpahkan anugerah berupa kesuburan tanah dan hasil panen yang cukup untuk menunjang kehidupan manusia.
  3. Selanjutnya, hari Selasa, disebut Sabuh Mas, yang juga tidak lepas kaitannya dengan Saraswati, di mana umat manusia akan menerima pahala dan rezeki berupa pemenuhan kebutuhan hidup lainnya, bila mampu menggunakan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi di jalan dharma. Pada hari itu umat Hindu di Bali memuja Sanghyang Widhi dalam manifestasi sebagai Mahadewa.
  4. Hari raya Pagerwesi di hari Rabu, yang dapat diartikan sebagai suatu pegangan hidup yang kuat bagaikan suatu pagar dari besi yang menjaga agar ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi yang sudah digunakan dalam fungsi kesucian, dapat dipelihara, dan dijaga agar selalu menjadi pedoman bagi kehidupan umat manusia selamanya.

Renungan Dalam Pagerwesi

Pada hari raya Pagerwesi adalah hari yang paling baik mendekatkan Atman kepada Brahman sebagai guru sejati . Pengetahuan sejati itulah sesungguhnya merupakan “pager besi” untuk melindungi hidup kita di dunia ini.  Inti dari perayaan Pagerwesi itu adalah memuja Tuhan sebagai guru yang sejati. Memuja berarti menyerahkan diri, menghormati, memohon, memuji dan memusatkan diri. Ini berarti kita harus menyerahkan kebodohan kita pada Tuhan agar beliau sebagai guru sejati dapat mengisi kita dengan kesucian dan pengetahuan sejati.

Banten Dalam Pagerwesi

Yadnya (Banten) yang paling utama disebutkan pada hari raya Pagerwesi yaitu :

  • Untuk Para Pendeta (Purohita) adalah “Sesayut Panca Lingga” sedangkan perlengkapan  tetandingan bantennya :
  • Daksina,
  • Suci Pras penyeneng, dan
  • Banten Penek.
    • Meskipun hakikat hari raya Pagerwesi sebagai pemujaan (yoga samadhi) bagi para Pendeta (Purohita) namun umat kebanyakan pun wajib ikut merayakan sesuai dengan kemampuan.
  • Dan Bagi umat kebanyakan yadnya (banten) disebutkan adalah;
    • natab Sesayut Pagehurip,
    • Prayascita,
    • Dapetan.
    • Tentunya dilengkapi Daksina,
    • Canang, dan
    • Sodan.
    • Dalam hal upacara, ada dua hal banten pokok yaitu
      • Sesayut Panca Lingga untuk upacara para pendeta,
      • dan Sesayut Pageh Urip bagi umat kebanyakan.
