Nyepi adalah hari raya umat Hindu yang dirayakan setiap tahun Baru Saka. Hari ini jatuh pada hitungan Tilem Kesanga (IX) yang dipercayai merupakan hari penyucian dewa-dewa yang berada di pusat samudera yang membawa intisari amerta air hidup. Untuk itu umat Hindu melakukan pemujaan suci terhadap mereka.

Pengertian Nyepi

Nyepi berasal dari kata sepi (sunyi, senyap). Hari Raya Nyepi sebenarnya merupakan perayaan Tahun Baru Hindu berdasarkan penanggalan/kalender caka, yang dimulai sejak tahun 78 Masehi. Tidak seperti perayaan tahun baru Masehi, Tahun Baru Saka di Bali dimulai dengan menyepi. Tidak ada aktivitas seperti biasa. Semua kegiatan ditiadakan, termasuk pelayanan umum, seperti Bandar Udara Internasional pun tutup, namun tidak untuk rumah sakit.

Tujuan utama Hari Raya Nyepi adalah memohon ke hadapan Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, untuk menyucikan Bhuana Alit (alam manusia/microcosmos) dan Bhuana Agung/macrocosmos (alam semesta). Sebelum Hari Raya Nyepi, terdapat beberapa rangkaian upacara yang dilakukan umat Hindu, khususnya di daerah Bali.

MELASTI, TAWUR (PECARUAN), DAN PENGRUPUKAN

Tiga atau dua hari sebelum Nyepi, umat Hindu melakukan Penyucian dengan melakukan upacara Melasti atau disebut juga Melis/Mekiyis. Pada hari tersebut, segala sarana persembahyangan yang ada di Pura (tempat suci) diarak ke pantai atau danau, karena laut atau danau adalah sumber air suci (tirta amerta) dan bisa menyucikan segala leteh (kotor) di dalam diri manusia dan alam.

Sehari sebelum Nyepi, yaitu pada “tilem sasih kesanga” (bulan mati yang ke-9), umat Hindu melaksanakan upacara Buta Yadnya di segala tingkatan masyarakat, mulai dari masing-masing keluarga, banjar, desa, kecamatan, dan seterusnya, dengan mengambil salah satu dari jenis-jenis caru (semacam sesajian) menurut kemampuannya. Buta Yadnya itu masing-masing bernama Pañca Sata (kecil), Pañca Sanak (sedang), dan Tawur Agung (besar). Tawur atau pecaruan sendiri merupakan penyucian/pemarisuda Buta Kala, dan segala leteh (kekotoran) diharapkan sirna semuanya. Caru yang dilaksanakan di rumah masing-masing terdiri dari nasi manca (lima) warna berjumlah 9 tanding/paket beserta lauk pauknya, seperti ayam brumbun (berwarna-warni) disertai tetabuhan arak/tuak. Buta Yadnya ini ditujukan kepada Sang Buta Raja, Buta Kala dan Batara Kala, dengan memohon supaya mereka tidak mengganggu umat.

Mecaru diikuti oleh upacara pengerupukan, yaitu menyebar-nyebar nasi tawur, mengobori-obori rumah dan seluruh pekarangan, menyemburi rumah dan pekarangan dengan mesiu, serta memukul benda-benda apa saja (biasanya kentongan) hingga bersuara ramai/gaduh. Tahapan ini dilakukan untuk mengusir Buta Kala dari lingkungan rumah, pekarangan, dan lingkungan sekitar. Khusus di Bali, pengrupukan biasanya dimeriahkan dengan pawai ogoh-ogoh yang merupakan perwujudan Buta Kala yang diarak keliling lingkungan, dan kemudian dibakar. Tujuannya sama yaitu mengusir Buta Kala dari lingkungan sekitar.

PUNCAK ACARA NYEPI

Keesokan harinya, yaitu pada pinanggal pisan, sasih Kedasa (tanggal 1, bulan ke-10), tibalah Hari Raya Nyepi sesungguhnya. Pada hari ini suasana seperti mati. Tidak ada kesibukan aktivitas seperti biasa. Pada hari ini umat Hindu melaksanakan “Catur Brata” Penyepian yang terdiri dari amati geni (tiada berapi-api/tidak menggunakan dan atau menghidupkan api), amati karya (tidak bekerja), amati lelungan (tidak bepergian), dan amati lelanguan (tidak mendengarkan hiburan). Serta bagi yang mampu juga melaksanakan tapa, brata, yoga, dan semadhi.

Demikianlah untuk masa baru, benar-benar dimulai dengan suatu halaman baru yang putih bersih. Untuk memulai hidup dalam tahun baru Caka pun, dasar ini dipergunakan, sehingga semua yang kita lakukan berawal dari tidak ada,suci dan bersih. Tiap orang berilmu (sang wruhing tattwa jñana) melaksanakan brata (pengekangan hawa nafsu), yoga (menghubungkan jiwa dengan paramatma (Tuhan)), tapa (latihan ketahanan menderita), dan samadi (manunggal kepada Tuhan, yang tujuan akhirnya adalah kesucian lahir batin).

Semua itu menjadi keharusan bagi umat Hindu agar memiliki kesiapan batin untuk menghadapi setiap tantangan kehidupan pada tahun yang baru.

NGEMBAK GENI (NGEMBAK API)

Rangkaian terakhir dari perayaan Tahun Baru Saka adalah hari Ngembak Geni yang jatuh pada “pinanggal ping kalih” (tanggal 2) sasih kedasa (bulan X). Pada hari ini Tahun Baru Saka tersebut memasuki hari ke dua. Umat Hindu melakukan Dharma Shanti dengan keluarga besar dan tetangga, mengucap syukur dan saling maaf memaafkan (ksama) satu sama lain, untuk memulai lembaran tahun baru yang bersih. Inti Dharma Santi adalah filsafat Tattwamasi yang memandang bahwa semua manusia di seluruh penjuru bumi sebagai ciptaan Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa hendaknya saling menyayangi satu dengan yang lain, memaafkan segala kesalahan dan kekeliruan. Hidup di dalam kerukunan dan damai.

Arti Saraswati

Kata “Saraswati” adalah sebuah nama suci untuk menyebutkan sosok Dewi Ilmu Pengetahuan. Kata Saraswati itu terdiri secara etimologi berasal dari kata ‘saras’ dan ‘wati’. Kata “saras” yang juga berasal dari urat kata sansekerta “sr” memiliki arti mata air, terus-menerus atau sesuatu yang terus-menerus mengalir. Sedangkan Kata “wati” berarti yang memiliki. Arti lengkap kata “Saraswati” adalah sesuatu yang memiliki atau mempunyai sifat mengalirkan secara terus menerus air kehidupan dan ilmu pengetahuan. Inilah difinisi kata Saraswati yang di difinisikan oleh I Gusti Ketut Widana.

Dewi Saraswati merupakan sakti dari Dewa Brahma sebagai Dewa Pencipta. Dewi Saraswati merupakan Dewi yang menurunkan Ilmu Pengetahuan kepada manusia yang berguna bagi diri sendiri, masyarakat, bangsa dan negara dalam menjalani kehidupan.

Hari raya Saraswati dirayakan tiap 6 bulan (210 hari) sekali yaitu pada hari Sabtu umanis wuku Watugunung. Pada hari Saraswati, Umat Hindu memuja Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa dalam manifestasinya sebagai Dewi raswati. Dewi Saraswati merupakan simbol dari kekuatan Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa dalam menciptakan/menurunkan ilmu pengetahuan. Kekuatan Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa dalam manifestasinya dilambangkan dengan seorang Dewi yang cantik bertangan 4 (empat) dengan memegang alat musik, genitri, pustaka suci, serta bunga teratai.

Lambang/Simbul Dewi Saraswati

Wanita cantik merupakan simbul dari kekuatan yang indah, menarik, lemah lembut, mulia. Wanita yang mempunyai ciri-ciri tersebut merupakan dambaan/idola setiap orang. Disini ada semacam proses keinginan untuk mengadakan pendekatan secara utuh. Pendekatan ini merupakan pendekatan terhadap Sang Dewi dengan menempuh proses belajar untuk mendapatkan ilmu pengetahuan. Sosok cantik untuk menggambarkan Dewi Saraswati hanyalah sebuah arti simbolis, bahwa cantik itu menarik. Oleh sebab itu maka Dewi Saraswati merupakan dewi ilmu pengetahuan yang akan menyebabkan manusia tertarik untuk mempelajari-Nya. Ketertarikan disini bukanlah dari sisi fisik atau biologis, melainkan dilihat dari segi etik-religius.

Genitri merupakan simbol dari kekekalan/keabadian dan tidak terbatasnya ilmu pengetahuan yang tidak akan habis untuk dipelajari. Genitri juga digunakan untuk melakukan aktivitas ritual yang disebut dengan japa mantra (diucapkan secara berulang-ulang). Ini menunjukkan ilmu pengetahuan itu sangat luas, serta dipelajari secara terus-menerus (kontinu) baik melalui pendidikan formal maupun informal.

Pustaka Suci/Lontar merupakan simbol dari ilmu pengetahuan suci. Pada hakekatnya ilmu pengetahuan tersebut baik untuk dipelajari. Setelah ilmu pengetahuan didapat maka penggunannya perlu disesuaikan dengan tepat dan berhasil guna sehingga menghasilkan manfaat yang berguna bagi kehidupan orang banyak. Menurut kalimat  penulis, ilmu pengetahuan suci tersebut yakni Veda itu sendiri yang sebagai sumber ilmu pengetahuan.

Teratai merupakan simbol kesucian dari Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa. Hal ini karena bunga taratai mempunyai keunikan tersendiri Hidup-nya bunga teratai di tiga (3) alam; (1) alam lumpur, (2) alam air dan (3) alam udara. Oleh sebab itu maka hidup dari bunga teratai di tiga (3) alam yaitu alam Bhur, Bwah dan Swah yang disebut dengan tri buana. Walaupun hidup dialam air, bunga teratai tidak basah oleh air sehingga dipakai simbol kesucian serta bebas dari keterikatan. Dalam hal ini Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa walaupun menciptakan alam beserta isinya. Beliau tidak terikat dengan ciptaan-Nya sendiri.

Angsa merupakan simbol dari kebijaksanaan. Hidupnya angsa tersebut juga dialam tiga (3) alam dunia (Bhur, Bwah, Swah) air, darat, dan udara sebagai lambang kuasa dari Ida Sanghyang Widi Wasa. Angsa dalam mencari makan dapat memisahkan antara makanan dan lumpur. Dengan demikian angsa merupakan dari adanya sifat wiweka yang tinggi dapat membedakan atau memisahkan antara baik dan buruk, benar dan salah.

Alat musik, merupakan simbol budaya yang tinggi. Kesenian merupakan alat penghibur di saat pikiran sedang kacau/kegelapan. Dalam hal ini ilmu pengetahuan dilambangkan sebagai alat musik yang bisa menghibur dikala kegelapan. Ilmu Pengetahuan juga merupakan simbol keindahan dinikmati sepanjang hidup.

Brata Saraswati

Dewasa ini kita mengenal adanya Brata penyepian, Brata siwalatri namun untuk brata Saraswati belum populer. Untuk memuja Dewi Saraswati juga diperlukan brata atau pantangan yang perlu dilakukan, Pantangan tersebut menurut rumusan Bapak Drs. Gede Sura antara lain:

1. Upakara pemujaan Saraswati dilakukan pada pagi hari atau sebelum tengah hari.
2. Sebelum upacara Saraswati dan sebelum lewat tengah hari, tidak diperkenankan membaca dan atau menuiis mantra dari kesusastraan. Bila melanggar, niscaya hasilnya tidak mendapat kerta wara Nugraha Sanghyang Aji Saraswati.
3. Bagi umat yang melaksanakan “Brata Saraswati” secara penuh, tidak diperkenankan membaca dan menulis selama 24 jam.
4. dalam mempelajari segala ilmu pengetahuan “pangweruh” agar senantiasa dilandasi dengan hati yang jernih serta pikiran “astiti bakti” kehadapan Hyang Saraswati dan termasuk merawat perpustakaan, baik berupa buku-buku dalam segala jenis maupun lontar-lontar yang dimiliki.

Makna Saraswati

Waktu yang tepat untuk mempelajari ilmu pengetahuan adalah saat kita masih muda. Ini bukan berarti orang yang sudah tua tidak baik untuk belajar. Karena saat kita masih muda mencapai puncak kekuatan baik pikiran, Fisik kepekaan dll. Disamping itu pada masa muda beban hidup relatif masih sedikit sehingga banyak waktu luang untuk mempelajari ilmu pengetahuan dibandingkan dengan masa tua. Dalam ajaran agama Hindu ada catur purusa artha sebagai jenjang kehidupan yang mesti dilalui yakni brahmacari, grehasta, saniasin dan wanaprasta. Pada masa brahmacari inilah merupakan masa belajar yang baik. Sedangkan untuk mencari artha, dan kama baik dicari pada masa greasta (hidup berumah tangga) yang berdasarkan atas darma. Hal ini dapat kita pahami pada SS 27 sbb :

Yuaviva dharmaman vicched yuva
vittam yuva crutam,
Tiryyadbhavati vai dharbha utpatan
na ca viddyati

Matangnya deyaning wwang,
Pengponganikang kayowanan,
Panedeng ning awak,
Sadhanakena ri karja naning
dharma, artha, jnana, kunang apan
tan pada kacaktining atuha lawan rare,
Drstanta nahan yangalalang atuha,
Telas rumepa, marin alandep ika

Artinya:
Karena perilaku seseorang;
hendaklah digunakan sebaik-baiknya masa muda,
selagi badan sedang kuatnya,
hendaklah dipergunakan untuk
usaha menuntut dharma, artha, dan ilmu pengetahuan,
sebab tidak sama kekuatan orang tua dengan kekuatan anak muda
contohnya ialah seperti ilalang yang telah tua itu menjadi rebah, dan ujungnya itu tak tajam lagi.

Manusia wajib untuk menuntut ilmu pengetahuan sebanyak mungkin karena pada masa brahmacari adalah merupakan dasar dari seluruh lapangan hidup yang akan ditempuh pada masa berikutnya. Masa berikutnya adalah sa greasta, wanaprasta dan sanyasin. Yang terpenting diusahakan pada masa brahmacari adalah ilmu pengetahuan karena ilmu pengetahuan tersebut memegang peranan dalam menempuh kehidupan berikutnya. Pada masa brahmacari ini tidak bisa lepas dari peranan catur guru yakni guru rupapa, (orang tua), guru wisesa (pemerintah), guru pengajian (guru, dosen dll), dan guru Swadyaya (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa).

Umat Hindu memuja Dewi Saraswati berarti memuja dan menjungjung tinggi nilai ilmu pengetahuan dan kebijaksanaan. Hal ini bertujuan agar ilmu pengetahuan yang sudah dimiliki bermanfaat bagi diri sendiri masyarakat, lingkungan, nusa dan bangsa. Tetapi kenyataan dimasyarakat bahwa ilmu pengetahuan belum sepenuhnya berdaya guna secara maksimal. Masih banyak ditemui seseorang yang mempunyai gelar sarjana Hukum bekerja pada perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang ekonomi atau sebaliknya. Atau seseorang yang mempunyai ilmu pengetahuan yang relatif tinggi tidak berdaya guna secara maksimal baik untuk dirinya sendiri, maupun orang banyak. Bahkan akhir-akhir ini banyak kita jumpai orang yang memiliki ilmu pengetahuan yang relatif tinggi dipergunakan untuk mencelakai, menipu, membodohi orang lain.

Dewi Saraswati mempunyai peranan yang sangat besar untuk memotif asi manusia untuk sadar bahwa Ilmu Pengetahuan sangat penting dalam kehidupan Ilmu Pengetahuan bagaikan obor yang menerangi untuk membebaskan diri dari kegelapan, kedukaan, kemarahan yang merupakan sebab dari kesengsaraan. Berkat Ilmu Pengetahuan orang dapat mengurangi beban hidup serta menjadikan dirinya lebih mulia. Dengan berbekal Ilmu Pengetahuan orang dapat mengikuti perkembangan jaman (IPTEK).

Oleh sebab itu marilah kita tingkatkan bakti terhadap Dewi Saraswati dengan jalan memanjatkan segala doa puja kehadapan Beliau. Semoga Beliau berkenan menganugrahkan kesejahteraan dan kebahagiaan kepada kita semua. Serta ilmu pengetahuan yang kita miliki dapat berdaya guna secara maksimal untuk kebaikan diri sendiri, masyarakat, maupun masa depan.
